Off to Notre Dame

May 11, 2009

Ever since Charlotte began to attend Dowanhill Primary a few months ago, we were made aware that the school would eventually close and combine with a number of other primaries to form a “super school.” Many of the parents were greatly saddened, but the council had announced their intentions a year or more ago, and it was a completed deal.

Our question was, “What should our family do?” We were told by Dowanhill that we could transfer her to Hill Head primary or have Charlotte attend the new “superschool” when it was finished.

We do not currently have a car, which honestly, has been very good for us in a number of ways, but the new school would be at least a 20 minute walk each way. Now, if you’re in relatively good shape you might be saying, “Hey, no sweat! Nothing like a good walk to get ya goin’!” Which is true, but, give it a shot when you’re pregnant and also have one in a pram, and two others walking with you…..in the pouring rain. 🙂

So….we looked around. Hyndland Primary had no spots at the moment for our daughter, Hill Head had also filled up. Then one day I was coming home from Bible read-thru, and walked past (and eventually into) Notre Dame primary. It is a Catholic, public school here in Glasgow, and one which has received tremendous marks all around for their teaching.

I spoke with the Headmistress who asked me a few questions and then mentioned that if Charlotte would like to attend, there was a spot for her right now…this year, but not next year at the beginning of the school season. And, if Raiden was going to begin next year in Primary one, they also had a spot for him.

So, Shauna and I talked, prayed, and filled out the forms. As we turned them in, we realized that it was by no means a sure thing, and we entrusted the outcome to whatever God willed. This was on a Friday.

The next Monday was a bank holiday, Shauna checked in on Tuesday to ask if they needed anything further from us. They said ,”Nope, Charlotte is good to go, we’ll see her next Monday!” Wow.

Today was that Monday, and I have to say I am very proud of my little girl. As we walked, she expressed how excited she was to be starting in yet another school. She said that she was a little nervous, but also very excited to meet new friends, and definitely thrilled with the more formal Catholic School uniform! (A collared shirt with tie and skirt..)

So much change for our family in the last 2 years, and our kids manage it all in stride. Thank you Lord for such wonderful, flexible kids….may I learn to be just a bit more like them!!
